Top Tips on Painting Your Home
Have your walls seen better days? Are they looking dull and in need of a little TLC? If you have begun to notice signs of paint flaking or fading and your walls could do with a new lease of life, but you are not sure where to start, read on for some helpful tips or consider hiring specialist in commercial and residential painting. In this short post, we will help you plan your painting project so that you will be admiring your handy work in no time at all. A fresh coat of paint can make all the difference to a room, having a bigger impact than you would imagine.
Plan Plan Plan
Before you go ahead and just buy a load of paint, you will need to look at where you want to paint and if you are going to paint all four walls in the same colour. Think about creating an accent wall in a bolder colour to draw attention and possibly highlight a feature such as a fireplace or ornate mouldings. An accent wall will also give your room some serious design points too.
Don’t forget to look at the whole room, this means counting the ceiling, skirting and doors. You do not want to go to all the trouble of freshening your room to have grubby skirting boards.
Choose Your Colour
We all know too well how overwhelming flicking through those fan decks of paint colours can be. You can start to feel as though all the colours begin to blend into one! The best way to make your choice is through a process of elimination. Do you want your shade to be warm or cool? Do you want your accent wall to compliment a piece of existing furniture or art? Once you have narrowed down a few colours, it will be easier to make the right choice. You can even get samples of a few different shades to try out before you fully commit.
Get the Right Tools
One of the most important things to consider is making sure that you have the right tools to start the project. As you can imagine, you will need different tools depending on the surface you are painting but here are a few must-haves:
- Paintbrushes
- Paint roller and extension pole
- Paint tray
- Sandpaper
- Painter’s tape
- Drop cloths and rags
- Putty knife
Work Out How Much Paint You Will Need
There is nothing worse than being halfway through a paint project to then run out of paint. To save this from happening, make sure you have plenty of paint to see you through. To work out how much paint you are going to need, you will need to work out the room’s square footage. Just add together the length of all walls and multiply by the height of the room.
You also want to take into account the quality of paint you are buying. For example, trade paint which is used by professionals is a higher quality paint that will not only stand the test of time but will give your surfaces a superior finish.
