Marital Discord: 5 Undeniable Signs Your Marriage Is Over
By now, you’ve probably heard all about how the U.S. divorce rate has gone down quite a bit over the course of the last 30 years. It fell almost 20% between 2008 and 2016 alone.
But there are still plenty of people getting divorced every year. According to the CDC, almost 800,000 couples get divorced on an annual basis.
Do you suspect you and your spouse might be headed in that direction? You should look out for the signs your marriage is over and avoid ignoring them.
Here are five signs that’ll let you know your marriage might be on the verge of ending.
1. You Feel Lonely Almost All the Time
It’s not uncommon for everyone—regardless of whether they’re married or single—to feel lonely from time to time. Loneliness is something that has turned into a big issue for many people.
But if you’re married and you feel lonely almost all the time, that could indicate a problem. It shows that you and your spouse aren’t connecting for whatever reason.
You might be able to change that by recommitting to your relationship and finding ways to spend more time with your spouse. But if your spouse isn’t willing to work on this issue, it might also be time to prepare for divorce.
2. You No Longer Enjoy Spending Time With Your Spouse
When you and your spouse first got married, you likely enjoyed doing everything together. From going food shopping to going to the movies, it was hard to keep you apart.
It’s rare to see couples go through their entire lives together with that same level of enthusiasm when it comes to doing things together. But married couples should enjoy doing at least a few things together.
If you no longer like spending time with your spouse, it could be one of the signs your marriage is over. It’s going to be hard to maintain your marriage when you don’t want to do things with your spouse.
3. You Don’t Trust Your Spouse for One Reason or Another
Maybe your spouse stepped out of your marriage and cheated on you with someone else. Maybe they hid an addiction from you for years. Or maybe they did something else that made you question their character.
Whatever the case, you’re not going to be able to stay married to your spouse if you don’t trust them. If you’re not able to find a way to rebuild your trust for them, you’re going to find yourself moving in the direction of divorce sooner or later.
4. You and Your Spouse Have Stopped Having Sex Completely
When is the last time you and your spouse had sex? If you have to spend more than a few seconds trying to come up with an answer, it could be one of the signs your marriage is over.
You and your spouse don’t need to have sex every single day to maintain a strong physical connection. But you also shouldn’t be like the 15% of married couples who don’t have sex at all.
5. You Don’t See Your Spouse in the Picture When You Imagine Your Future
When you close your eyes and imagine what your future is going to be like, do you see your spouse by your side? If you don’t, it’s not a good sign for your marriage.
You and your spouse should be working hard to build a future together. If you’re not in agreement on where your future is going to take you, you might be headed in two different directions right now.
