The Gadsby Tavern opened in 1785 and was frequented by historical figures of our country; just imagine the conversations they had. While it is a museum now, it is most definitely worth starting the day. Other fun sites include the Stabler-Leadbeater Apothecary Museum, the Alexandria Farmers Market, and the George Washington Masonic National Memorial. Plus, make sure to save an hour or two to stroll down King Street Mile for local shopping, picture taking, and a quick coffee break!
Harrisburg, PA
Time: 1 hour and 20 minutes
As the capital of Pennsylvania, Harrisburg is rich in local and national history, in addition to art, food, and other terrific attractions. When taking a day trip to Harrisburg, we suggest you start with the past by visiting the National Civil War Museum, the Pennsylvania State Capital, and the National Fire Museum. Afterward, head to the oldest continuously operating farmers’ market, Broad Street Market, for shopping and lunch. At the end of the day, especially if you are traveling as a couple, we suggest taking the famous riverboat cruise on the Susquehanna River.
Philadelphia, PA
Time: 1 hour and 45 minutes
Known as the City of Brotherly Love, Philadelphia is the perfect day trip for history buffs and parents looking to teach their children about the birthplace of America. In just one day, you and your group will be able to visit Independence Hall, the Liberty Bell, Independence National Historical Park, Congress Hall, and more. We also recommend checking out the Benjamin Franklin Bridge, Christ Church, and the Philadelphia Museum of Art.
