Should I Install a Ductless AC Unit?
To go ductless or not to go ductless, that is the question. But, what is ductless AC anyway, what are the pros and cons, and why does it make sure a difference one way or the other?
What is Ductless AC?
The basic idea is that ductless AC/HVAC doesn’t have ducts. Instead, these systems combine mini-split technology with a heat pump. The system uses an outdoor condenser to absorb heat and move it into your home through indoor handlers, which the installer can place in your wall(s) or ceiling(s). It’s the perfect solution for older homes or those homes that just don’t have the room to spare for ductwork.
What are the Pros and Cons of Ductless HVAC?
There are three main reasons why you’ll want to consider ductless HVAC installation:
First, there are no ducts in ductless HVAC. Ducts can be expensive to install (so ductless is cheaper), and they can take up every bit of needed storage space. Ducts can also leak, capture pollutants and allergens, and further exacerbate respiratory and health issues. A potential negative of this are that you may need to have several of these units installed to cover the same area as a single central air conditioning system. Second, it’s more affordable in the long run to install a ductless HVAC system, and it’s more energy efficient. So that energy efficiency saves more money too. However, the upfront costs for the ductless HVAC system may be more expensive. The cooling may not be as consistent, depending on the layout of your home and where the units can be placed.
Third, installing a ductless HVAC system is relatively quick and easy, with a 1-2 day installation period. It’s not as cumbersome as the installation of the ducts, which can take at least a week. However, ductless HVAC does not include filters to improve air quality and filter for allergens.
While there are pros and cons for a ductless AC system, this solution offers fair cost effectiveness and ease, and the energy efficiency and cool air conditioning are factors that might add to your resale value no matter what your choice is. While it might be difficult to make a choice that will last for years, the Ductless system also is the most easily reversible decision you can make. You can’t really go wrong.
What’s the Difference, Really?
When you come right down to it, the choice is up to you. The ductless HVAC system is flexible and efficient. It’s targeted for older homes that don’t have ducts, and it’s economical and easy to use. It’s also faster to get the units up and running, with the install taking place over just a few days. Depending on the layout and size of your home, you may even have a ductless AC unit up and running in as little as a day. When it’s summertime, and you’ve been sweltering at home for more than a month, just wishing for a reprieve from the miserable heat, it’s the solution you want and need. It just makes sense.
