The Catacombs
No trip to Paris is complete without a journey underground into the Catacombs.
These medieval tombs sit in tunnels under the city streets. It is estimated that around six million bodies are laid to rest there.
Now a major tourist attraction, the Catacombs were initially created as a measure to address Paris’ problem with overpopulated cemeteries.
After burials in the Catacombs were discontinued, the tunnels were almost forgotten about. They became a novelty forum for private functions in the 19th century, however, and are a major tourist attraction today.
The Louvre
Famously home to Da Vinci’s ‘Mona Lisa,’ the Louvre is the most visited museum in Europe today. It is also the world’s largest art museum.
Located on the bank of the Seine, the Louvre is home to the works of many of the revered artists of the Renaissance period. As well as this, it features a wealth of art from ancient civilizations.
Nowadays, the Louvre is almost as famous for its queues as its art collection! Plan to arrive before it opens if you want to minimize your wait time.
The Champs-Élysées & the Arc de Triomphe
The Champs-Élysées is one of the world’s best-known streets.
Running for over a mile, the Champs-Élysées has every kind of restaurant and shopping outlet. If you had the time, you could spend a full day of your trip here!
At the top of the road sits the Arc de Triomphe, the equally famous triumphal arch which was designed in 1806.
Île de la Cité
Île de la Cité is a natural island which sits on the Seine.
On the island are the Notre Dame Cathedral and Sainte Chappelle. Unfortunately, the former was badly damaged in a fire in 2019 and is not currently open to the public.
The Eiffel Tower
No list of Parisian attractions would be complete without some mention of the Eiffel Tower.
The most famous attraction in Paris (and possibly the world), the tower stands 324 meters tall. For a fee, visitors can climb to various viewing decks within the tower.
The Eiffel Tower is lit up at night, providing a spectacular sight for tourists and Parisians alike.
