5 Essential Self-Care Items for Men
The age of self-care has embraced not only women of all shapes, sizes, and cultures, but men – along with all of the baggage that toxic masculinity has created for them. Men are taking charge of their health and well-being by treating themselves and, in turn, their minds!
Self-care can be great for relieving stress. Getting a few moments to yourself once a week or so will do wonders for your mental health and your look; whether you want to appear well-groomed, or rugged but still appealing, here are some products that every man should add to their daily or weekly routine.
1. Skincare Products
We’re going to dig even deeper into this topic further on, but a good place to start when it comes to self-care is your skin.
At the very least you should be finding a good cleanser for your skin type. Oily, dry, red – there are countless products out there to help get your skin looking clearer and healthier than it ever has.
When it comes to ingredients, organic and natural are better. Look for oils (olive oil, coconut oil) and aloe, which has a calming and anti-inflammatory effect on skin, as well as salicylic acid, which both exfoliated and moisturizes.
Follow up a cleanser with regular lotion use to keep skin from getting dry. There is also the option of face masks. Yes, they look ridiculous. But they can do wonders when it comes to giving your skin a healthy glow. If you have a partner, this is a great opportunity to enjoy some time together, relaxing and most likely making fun of how ridiculous you both look.
2. Beard Oil
Beard oils have become more and more popular in the last few years, especially with facial hair making a come-back and sticking around.
Beards are sexy, and no matter what look you’re going for, whether it’s rugged or trim, it’s important to keep your beard healthy. Beard oils keep your facial hair and the skin beneath moisturized. Keep in mind that your facial hair is what comes into contact with much of the outside world. Food, wind, cold weather. Like the hair on your head, it needs to be conditioned occasionally to remain healthy and attractive.
When it comes to beard growth, the oil’s biggest benefit is that it keeps skin healthy and moisturized. Look for oils made with specific oils such as argan and jojoba, both of which can be found in many beneficial hair care products. Here is the list of the highest-selling beard grooming kits for your beard.
3. The Hair on Your Head
Women spend an awful lot of money not only getting their hair cut, but having it styled whenever necessary as well.
Men’s haircuts aren’t so different – the cost of a haircut can get pretty high, and if you’re spending a good amount of money, then why not maintain that healthy, styled look?
Good shampoo should already be a part of your routine, but no matter how short your hair is, it’s important to get a great conditioner as well. As with your beard, the hair on your head should be well-moisturized to prevent flaking and to promote growth.
If you have the time and would like to get a little further into hair care, look into creams, pomades, and oils. All three can drastically affect your style and how you present yourself.
As a final option, consider dry shampoos. They’re not great for your hair when used long-term as they pull oil out of your hair, but they’re perfect for that last-minute touchup. Weren’t expecting to go out right after work? Don’t have time for a full shower? Use dry shampoo to get rid of that greasy look, and make sure you condition well next time you have the chance.
4. The Brows
Men who maintain their eyebrows can be incredibly attractive.
We’re not asking you to step into a shop. It’s actually much easier than that. There are quite a few at-home waxing products that can be used in the privacy of your bathroom to tidy up loose hairs. You don’t need to spend endless amounts of time plucking, and if you can avoid it, you should!
How often and to what extent you want to man-scape depends entirely on you. Although we’ve made several suggestions above, remember that the most important thing is to stick with what makes you comfortable. Make sure that whatever you do decide to add to your routine makes you feel good about yourself, and doesn’t disrupt what you have the time and patience for.
At the very least take care of yourself! Whether that means keeping skin healthy and clear or sculpting your brows to the perfect thickness, just do you. Take a few minutes every day to indulge yourself and you’ll find that the benefits are not only physical, but mental.
