4 Super Simple Home Repairs That You Can DIY

How many home repairs are on your to-do list right now? The average American has nine DIY projects that desperately need attention. With the New Year upon us, now is the perfect time to tackle those DIY projects you’ve been putting off.

Don’t let inexperience stop you from tackling common repair projects. By learning these basic tasks, you can save yourself hundreds.

Learn how to do these four common home repair projects.

1. Unclog Your Toilet

You head to the restroom to do your usual duty, finish, and hit the handle to flush. Except nothing happens, the water isn’t going down. It’s a dreaded clog.

There are two things you should do before you call a plumber. The first is to grab your plunger and give it eight to ten firm downward thrusts. If it’s a minor clog, this should fix it.

If the clog is bigger, try step two. You’ll use a toilet auger by sliding the end of the auger in until it hits the clog. Then start turning the crank.

Get a good grip on the clog and pull it out. If neither of these methods work, then it’s time to call the professionals in.

2. Stop the Leaking Pipe

If you have a pipe in your kitchen or bathroom that won’t stop leaking, you can fix it yourself. There are two common causes for the leak. It’s probably a broken compression nut or a worn-out washer.

Start by turning the water off to the sink. Put a bucket under the pipe and unscrew the big white compression nut. Take this opportunity to clean out the curved pipe.

Replace your washer or compression nut and then you can screw everything back together and turn the water back on.

3. Fix Your Concrete Stairs

Nothing is more dangerous than stairs that are starting decay. The last thing you need is someone losing their balance or slipping on the chipped or broken concrete.

You can do small concrete stair repair yourself with some fast set repair compound.

All you need to do is clean up your stairs and remove any loose particles. Then form your few stairs with a trowel and let them set.

4. Patch the Hole in Your Drywall

Holes in your walls are inevitable. Thankfully, they’re easy to fix. For small holes, such as screw and nail holes, all you need is a putty knife and a bit of spackle. Clean the area and use the putty knife to press some spackle into the hole.

Let the spackle set and then use some fine-grain sandpaper to smooth the area out. Apply a coat of paint if necessary.
