Here’s Why You Need a Career Change (and How to Get There)

Anyone with a job has probably experienced the same feeling of dread at some point or another. Feeling disengaged and uninspired at work isn’t a new phenomenon, but the statistics are showing a rapid decline in workplace happiness. According to a study from Gallup, only 33 percent of U.S. workers are engaged and 51 percent of employees are searching for new jobs. Although you may find some comfort knowing you’re not alone in your feelings of discontentment at work, it doesn’t change the fact that you’re ready for something new. If you’ve grown tired of your job, it may be time to change it up and take a look at all of the ways you can benefit from jumping ship.

Explore New Interests

It’s not uncommon to stumble into a career instead of taking a deliberate, intentional path to a career you’re actually interested in. But when you venture out on your own, you can wear the hat of an entrepreneur while tapping into your passions at the same time. Choose an area of business you’re already interested in whether as a virtual assistant for business owners in the financial space or selling products with a business like Amway. What is Amway? It’s a direct sales company that offers home, health and nutrition products; when partnered with the company as an Independent Business Owner, you can set your own hours and sell the products you use and love. No matter your interests, keep looking. There are always resources from social media to how-to guides that can introduce you to the business you’re interested in without the risk.

Create More Flexibility

Most people are craving more flexibility in their careers. In fact, a study by Harvard Business Review found that 96 percent of U.S. professionals say they need flexibility, but only 47 percent actually have it. A 9 to 5 makes it hard to score that needed flexibility to pursue a degree, spend more time with your family, or attend to your hobbies. Meanwhile, you can create all the flexibility you need with your own business. Make a list of your priorities and look for ways to business build around them. Travel lovers can look into remote careers from database management to teaching English abroad. Meanwhile, someone who wants a schedule that matches their kids’ activities can look into freelance writing or graphic design to set your own hours.

Earn Unlimited Income

A traditional job usually provides consistent, predictable income but doesn’t necessarily lead to big raises and unexpected windfalls. In fact, a survey by Bankrate found that 62 percent of those polled had not received a pay raise in their current jobs for the past 12 months. And the year before that, Bankrate found that 52 percent reported not receiving raises. If you’re among those who haven’t receive a raise in years, it may be time to create your own income streams. Whether you want to build a lucrative career as a consultant or open your own online shop, you can put yourself in the driver seat of your income.

Changing up your career doesn’t happen overnight, but can be a reality with a little momentum, a plan of action, and the right resources in place. From exploring proven business models to creating your own income, you have the power to change things up and take control over your career. Ask yourself where you want to be this time next year.
